The Democratic Party recently recorded a record low approval rating of just 31% according to a January favorability rating by Quinnipiac.
I’ve witnessed events nationally and locally that would appear to more than justify the Democrats dismal poll numbers.
Let’s start with the national scene.
Despite their crushing presidential defeat last November, and disgusted major donors closing their checkbooks, the far left screamers learn nothing. However, I’m enjoying their plunge to the bottom and find their public protests entertaining. Based on what I’ve witnessed these folks are as dim as they appear on TV.
In a recent interview with Politico the Daily Caller reports that Maryland Democrat Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, continues the “He’s Hitler and a fascist” silliness about Trump. This time Raskin once again labels Trump a fascist adding that the Democrat party should be focused on “defending the U.S. democracy against Trump’s allegedly authoritarian executive actions of cutting waste, fraud and abuse.”
Why would anyone vote Democrat when their candidates publicly admit they don’t want waste, fraud, and corruption investigated?
The wasteful spending Elon Musk’s DOGE crew is turning up reveals that there is no expenditure so absurd [$14 million for “social cohesion” in Mali and $2 million for gender-affirming health care in Guatemala] that the Democrats wouldn’t spend our tax dollars on it.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez {NY} and California’s Maxine Waters, etc. were among the assorted oddball parade of extremist screamers and fruitcakes, appearing at D.C. leftist rallies, parades and other such events protesting DOGE. They yell, wave silly props, hand-lettered signs and sing nonsensical songs demonstrating to the public how dim and corrupt they are. Most of those in the cheering crowd are federal employees who live off taxpayer money. In D.C. more than 90 percent voted Democrat in 2024.
Democrat politicians’ personal bank accounts are bulging with cash while they scream that they shouldn’t be held accountable for the government waste, fraud and corruption that made them rich. Most Democrats have never held a real job outside of government and became wealthy while in office – elected or appointed. How? Where did that money come from?
Alexandria Ocasio-Corte is a prime example. Just six years ago, prior to becoming the U.S. Congressional representative from the Bronx, this 35-year-old gal was a bartender and waitress with a net worth of $15,000. West Coast pundit Steve Maikoski writes that there are reports that she is now worth more than $20 million.

When former community organizer Barack Obama entered the private sector, he got rich, well over $70 million rich. His new wealth is from personal appearances, book sales and speeches – a polite form of post presidency money laundering. Hunter Biden’s art sales have been another method of getting payola, with ten percent to the big guy. Bill Clinton prospered after his presidency; he has a net worth of $240 million,
And we are to believe that these people are politicians who just happen to be incredibly smart investors? As soon as they finish combing through governmental agencies DOGE is expected to investigate these post-politician gains. That should produce some eye-popping truths.
Some are just flat out stupid in their blatant larceny like the New Jersey Democrat Senator Robert Menendez. He made the thievery so obvious it was impossible to ignore. His luxury cars, gold bars, etc., were so difficult to hide and explain away that he’s now serving an 11-year prison term.
What desperate Democrats are currently trying to convince their dwindling supporters is: “You don’t need lower taxes or more efficient government and elected officials that will look out for you. We’re handling that.” They might as well yell: “Trump can’t stop us from stealing from you.”
Naïve, uninformed, and apathetic Democrat voters are the Democrat party’s enablers. Without them, their golden goose is cooked. It appears that they will never learn that Americans don’t like being lied to about programs that desperately need fixing while they deny that a problem exists.

Meanwhile Back At The Ranch: A crowd of some 40 middle-aged to elderly Democrat supporters gathered in downtown Fernandina Thursday morning, Feb. 20, to protest what they say is DOGE’s threat to Social Security.
Prior to meandering around on the sidewalk they entered the 501 Centre Street office of 4th District Congressman Aaron Bean voicing their grievances to his District Director Bryan Campbell, who also happens to be the husband of current Fernandina City Manager Sarah Campbell.
In addition to Congressman Bean’s HQ the Centre Street building contains a number of mental health care offices. After listening to this group’s rants and complaints it became obvious to me that they should have taken advantage of their time there to seek assistance from the occupants of those agencies, particularly for what appeared to be severe anger management issues.
Their garish hypocrisy was on full display along with their phony grievances, declaring that any dissenter questioning their motives is an ignorant boob. That would be me.
When I approached the crowd to ask about their protest, various folks chimed in angrily telling me that “DOGE was stealing money from Social Security” and I should be worried. They couldn’t explain how or provide any details to support their accusations. When I said I thought that an audit by DOGE was commendable and long overdue, they recoiled and scoffed, many telling me I didn’t know what was really taking place.

As Jacksonville’s WJXT, Channel 4, filmed the crowd milling about I was told by a protestor: “Be quiet we’re on TV”. While on camera one of the protestors told the group to chant their slogan. Another told me to get off the Centre St. sidewalk followed by a very annoyed woman who announced that if I took her picture she would sue me. She then pulled out a phone and took my picture.
This was a very angry and very confused crowd of folks you don’t want to join you for a beer.
While I was asking questions of them, a former head of the local Democrat Club, Sheila Cocchi, told me: “Dave, you’re the only Canadian I don’t like.” [Full disclosure here: I’m a Canadian-born naturalized U.S. citizen so she should have said “Canadian-American.”]
I was told by another protestor that the group calls itself by the catchy phrase of “Citizens of Fernandina, Congressional District 4” and was organized by Susan Sapp.
Despite the crowd being unable to explain their purpose other than in vague generalities and a silly chant that I can’t recall, the group provided light entertainment to passersby during an otherwise uneventful Thursday morning.
It was comical watching them all contorted in futile frustration and anger compounded by Trump’s popularity proclaiming that their intended and disinterested audience is more like Trump than it is like them. It must be tough being a liberal protestor these days.

“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”: Two members of the Fernandina Beach City Commission – Genece Minshew and James Antun – lied to their supporters and the public during their election campaigns while far-left extreme environmentalist Joyce Tuten tried to hide her true colors.
In September last year Commissioner Minshew, former head of Amelia Island’s Pride group, who publicly advocated making Fernandina Beach a gay vacation destination, switched her voter registration from Democrat to Republican the day before she registered to run for the Commission. Commissioner Tuten a newcomer from Maryland, switched from Democrat to “No Party Affiliation.” Minshew and Tuten then campaigned together, even going in tandem door-to-door.
Both realized that having a “D” after your name in Nassau County, where 75 percent of voters are registered Republican, wasn’t going to be helpful. So they lied to voters and attempted to hide the affiliations that echo their true radical beliefs.
Minshew admitted it saying: “…it is clear that having an R behind your name is important if you are to be successful in working with the county and the state, so I changed parties so that I can better represent all the citizens of the city.” Really Ms. Minshew? When I repeatedly called her to ask about the switch and her “gay vacation destination” comments she didn’t return my calls.
Minshew publicly admitted she has no scruples and does whatever is expedient in an attempt to brazenly mislead voters and get elected. She doesn’t believe in the conservative values of the Republican party she joined and will say and do anything to generate votes. How many of the Republican party’s Executive Committee meetings has she attended?
Mayor Antun is a local chiropractor who desperately needs a mental adjustment. His accomplishments as commissioner have been to abandon the anti-impact fee promises he made during his election campaign, nod adoringly at Minshew and Tuten, and then consistently vote in tandem with them.
Antun has no original thoughts. He lied to his supporters to get elected and raise money two years ago then abandoned them when elected. Prior to the election he railed against the city’s impact fees telling folks in meetings that I attended that the city overcharged him personally when he was opening his business and saying that if elected he would get rid of the fees.
He just voted along with Minshew and Tuten to triple those fees from $2,480 to $7,480 per new residential connection to the system. Antun adds nothing, zip, zero. He’s not to be trusted and is as useless and unresponsive as the plastic potted plant in the commission chambers.
Kudos to Vice Mayor Darron Ayscue and newly elected Commissioner Tim Poynter who wisely opposed the fee increase.

Thank you for your input, Dave!
Hi Dave, considering that, for so many of us it is a badge of honor to be dissed in your column, I shall sadly correct two mis-statement. Sheila Cocchi is the former chair of the Nassau County Democratic Party. Suzanne Sapp is the current chair of the Nassau County Democratic Party. Sheila has long been a member of, but never chaired, Amelia Island’s very own Democratic membership Association. As the President of the Democratic Club of Amelia Island, I look forward to the day when I too am worthy of your disdain.
Dave;
I’ve seen the Social Security numbers for recipients over 100 years old….. millions of these?
And a handful over 200 years old?
It seems impossible!
At the very least, straightening this out would have to save us some money, right? And that would lead to a more secure SS for actual qualified men, women and children?
Chuck – please don’t further confuse intellectually deficient people with sound logic.
Voters: Customers who buy promises from
Political Parties.
Political Parties: Businesses that sell promises to customers through various Media.
Media: Advertisers of the political parties who sell Propaganda and/or the Truth.
Hope they follow the money trail and expose all who are involved! Prosecute!
Inquiring minds want to know – how many countries tax their citizens and send the money to the USA ?
Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.
Thanks Dave for the post.
Dave: In commending Ayscue and Poynter for voting against the proposed impact fee increases you missed the real point. The latest city engineering consultant in her PowerPoint presentation acknowledged that only 36% of the water capacity and 51% of the sewer capacity are currently being used. Since capacity, aka impact, fees may only be used to fund new facilities necessitated by new development she indicted the city’s current fees as unlawful. For a fuller treatment of the topic see Glen Stettler’s and my column (Shakedown City is Doubling Down on Unlawful Fees) in this week’s edition of The Yulee News
The real purpose of the impact fee hike is to deter/block new development.
Remember the slogan–better not bigger–observe it in practice.
Al: You might want to read the article I cited. Because impact fees are governed by FL state and Federal constitutional law as highlighted recently in the SCOTUS decision we cited. If impact fees are administered by a local government as you suggest that’s unlawful as COFB found out in the earlier class actions.
Legal or illegal they raised the fees–you miss my point.
Al, Are you suggesting that if it’s for an agreed upon cause then violating State and Federal law is then justified? I don’t believe anyone has suggested the what or why of the Cities actions but the illegal administration of State laws. At least thats the way the judge and State have seen it.
You read far too much into humble comment.
Dave: Thanks for a well-written opinion piece.
